List of Programs

Grade Pre-K (3 years and older)

The Adventures of C. Weed the Snail and His Friends
Through the wonders of puppets, young students will learn about various ocean animals and their strange ways.  This class includes a basic overview of who lives in the sea followed by an assortment of hands-on specimens.

Grades K-1

At Home in the Sea
Geared toward younger students, this class is a general overview of what lives in the sea.  Extensive interactivity makes this class especially interesting for the little ones.  Sea stars, crabs, lobsters, and sea turtles are some of the subjects explored.

Grades 1-6

Greatest Fish Story Ever Told
Students are able to touch and examine a common ocean fish while learning about fish types, senses, breathing processes, and locomotion.  During grunion season and depending on availability, baby grunion fish may also be hatched by students.

Grades 2-6

Thar She Blows - A Whale of a Lesson
Examine the differences between baleen and toothed whales.  Hear whale sounds, view a slide show, participate in a whale breathing experiment, and watch as a student is transformed into a whale.

Grades 2-8

Treasures in the Tidepools
Explore what makes the tidepools such an incredible habitat as we find out what adaptations tidepool animals use to survive in the pounding surf.  Students will also check out a gigantic lobster molt, spit out their stomachs like a sea star, and use scientific inquiry to discover the unknown.

Grades 3-6

Shark!  It's OK to Go in the Water
Step into the jaws of a Great White!  Learn the facts while we dispel the myths about this misunderstood animal.  Students participate in a shark tagging demonstration, watch as a classmate is transformed into a shark, view a slide show, and follow-up with hands-on specimens, including a jaw from a Great White.  Each student will take home a fossil shark tooth embedded in plaster to complete their own shark dig.

What's Plankton Anyway?
Watch as a student is transformed into a SCUBA diving plankton collector.  View live plankton under a microscope and get a chance to taste plankton while learning about these odd creatures which are so important to our own survival.

Grades 3-8

Ten Arms and an Attitude:  Squid Dissection
Get face-to-face with some denizens of the deep!  Octopus, squid, and their relatives are some of the unusual creatures explored in this class.  Find out what makes squid special as students wrestle with tentacles, examine different types of squid and follow-up with a dissection.

No Guts, No Glory:  Fish Dissection
During this lesson, even the timid are transformed into doctors!  Learn about the many different types of fish, followed by an actual dissection of an ocean fish.  Also covered are the external/internal anatomy and function.

Fish Printing:   Gyotaku in the Classroom
This class allows students to experience the ancient Japanese art of Gyotaku (fish rubbing).  Each student will learn the background of Gyotaku and get to take home their own printed creation.
