Save the Vaquita Day

Saturday, July 06, 2013
12:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Join us to learn about one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world during the 1st annual Save the Vaquita Day. This event is sponsored by the American Cetacean Society/Los Angeles Chapter (ACS/LA) and the Muskwa Club as part of the Vaquita Project, a collaborative public awareness effort between the two groups.

The vaquita is an extremely endangered porpoise, with an estimated 120 to 150 animals left living in a very limited range in the northern Gulf of California. Many vaquitas meet an untimely demise as bycatch in shrimp trawls.

Find out how you can help protect the vaquita by making wise seafood choices and discovering more about this special animal. There will be vaquita presentations, displays, crafts and puzzles. Barb Taylor, a vaquita researcher from Southwest Fisheries Science Center, will give a short talk at 2pm.
