Friday, April 4, 2014
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Tom is currently the Director of Marine Programs for The Bay Foundation in Los Angeles. The principal focus of his work for the past 15 years has been the study and restoration of giant kelp forests in southern California. Other current projects include aerial mapping of boats, abalone genetics and disease risk management, sea urchin gonad indices development, and SCUBA based biological monitoring of Marine Protected Areas.

Tom has also dedicated thousands of hours to understanding and correcting sources of pollution in Los Angeles, largely through his work as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Waterkeeper. Education has been a central element of Tom’s work throughout the years and he currently teaches Environmental Science through the Center for Santa Monica Bay Studies at Loyola Marymount University. Tom serves on the Oil Spill Prevention and Response Technical Advisory Committee for the State of California and is the Chair of the Clean Beaches Clean Ocean Committee for the City of Santa Monica. With a B.A. from the University of Rhode Island and his M.A. from UCLA, Tom’s research interests and experiences span the Atlantic seaboard and the coastal ocean of southern California.

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation is leading a project to restore kelp forests along the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. Come hear Tom discuss past and present research on kelp restoration along the southern California coast.

FRIENDS members will enjoy free validated parking, an exclusive tour of the Kelp Room and experience a kelp holdfast dissection starting at 6pm.
