Unearthing The Historical Wetlands of Southern California
By Shawna Dark, CSU Northridge

Looking across today’s highly urbanized Los Angeles basin, it is almost impossible to imagine the area once included a vast complex of wetlands.

New technological tools in cartography are helping us understand the landscape processes, historic wetland distribution and the impacts of humans. This information will guide us as we plan sustainable restoration within the constraints of the contemporary landscape.

Our studies suggest that Los Angeles and much of Southern California may have been quite different than expected. In this presentation, the historical ecology of various wetlands in the Los Angeles region will be uncovered along with a discussion of the Southern California coast, cartography, and how modern tools help us to view the past.
