Underwater Parks Day

Saturday, January 16, 2010
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Join Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in learning about the ongoing process of designating Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Southern California. These areas, like parks on land, will protect underwater marine resources for future generations to enjoy. Plans set forth by the Marine Life Protection Act of 1999 call for a network of MPAs along the California coast. The process of designating where Southern California MPAs are located is currently underway and is heavily dependent upon public input. Speakers, presentations, interactive activities and handouts will be available so visitors can learn more about this important process that aims to preserve and improve California coastal marine resources. Similar activities are being held the same day at partner marine science centers including Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Ocean Institute in Dana Point and Birch Aquarium/Museum at Scripps in La Jolla.
