SEA Club is a great way for kids to spend an afternoon
The sea in SEA Club stands for Science Education Afternoons, which is the perfect name for this class hosted during the school year on Wednesday afternoons. Each month, class is held from 3:30 to 5:30pm for four consecutive Wednesdays to provide an after school program for local students.
SEA Club is offered for kindergarten to second graders one month and then third through sixth graders the next month on a rotating schedule. Classes include everything from squid dissections to tidepooling to arts and crafts. Each class varies depending on students’ interests.
“Students have a chance to help design the class,” explained Aquarium Educator Esther Nah. “On the first day of each session we give them a chance to share what they are interested in doing and learning about and that sets the tone for each class."
SEA Club is a hands-on marine science class that provides students experiences not offered in school. For example, they might have an opportunity to help feed CMA’s animals, study live animals closer by examining them through a microscope, explore the surrounding Cabrillo Coastal Park, learn about birds on the beach or find animals by sifting through the sand.
Third through sixth graders explore topics in more detail, but everyone who takes the class gets to have fun and experience marine life up-close and personal. Plus, children who participate in the class get to take home a cool SEA Club t-shirt. For more information on upcoming SEA Club classes, please check our calendar.
