Summer Whale Search
The waters between Los Angeles and Catalina have become a regular stop for feeding blue whales as they migrate between the California coast and their breeding grounds off of Costa Rica.
Researchers believe there are only about 10,000 blue whales in the world, but a thriving population of about 2,000 of these magnificent leviathans congregates each summer off the California coast to feed on krill in our nutrient-rich waters. Our very own, Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Education Award winner, Alisa Schulman-Janiger has been quoted, "It's looking like it's shaping up to be one of the best blue whale seasons ever," And she should know, she is a naturalist with the Los Angeles American Cetacean Society and has been tracking local whales for more than 30 years.
Want to see these 90-foot 150-ton animals yourself?
Join Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Saturday, August 8 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm to search for the great whales that visit our coast during the summer.
