Earth Day Poster and Photo Contest
Get ready for Earth Day by participating in our Earth Day Poster and Photo Contest! Show us your artistic interpretation of what Earth Day means to you.
To jump start your imagination it’s worth revisiting how Earth Day started 43 years ago. The first celebration was actually inspired by an environmental disaster that took place off the coast of Santa Barbara. In the beginning of 1969, a blow-out occurred at an oil platform operated by Union Oil. Oil washed ashore killing thousands of birds and many marine mammals. At the time, it was the largest oil spill in U.S waters and the devastation shocked the nation.
After the Santa Barbara oil spill people were motivated to take action! In 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency launched and the first Earth Day was held on April 22, with millions of people participating across the country. Now Earth Day events take place across the world throughout the month of April.
“Earth Day is a way to celebrate the natural resources we have and also raise awareness about how to protect those resources for future generations. The contest is a way for the community to get involved and reconnect with the meaning of Earth Day,” said Jim DePompei, Aquarium Educator. “For the poster contest, we want to see what your message is for taking care of the earth. What is most important to you and how would you convey that message by drawing, painting or using mixed-media? Think about how to inspire others to take action because that is the most powerful type of message.”
Also, to highlight our coastal environment and shore birds, the animals most impacted by the oil spill 43 years ago, CMA added a marine bird photo contest to the pre-Earth Day festivities. Submit your best photo of a marine bird in its natural habitat and you might just win a prize.
The Earth Day Poster and Photo Contest is open to all ages and awards are given out based on age groups. Winners receive gift certificates to the CMA Gift Shop, Earth Day t-shirts and other fun goodies. The winning entries will be on display in CMA’s Exhibit Hall from April through September. So get in the spirit of Earth Day, show off your creative flair and inspire others to take action through art. For contest rules and all the details on how to participate please click here. The deadline for entries is March 22, 2013.
