Help FCMA Raise $15,000

It’s that time of year again…a time for giving gifts to family and friends, and also a time for giving back to causes that are important to you. We ask that you consider donating to FRIENDS of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (FCMA) this holiday season. Renew your belief in safeguarding Southern California’s ocean environment through education and research.

“We realize there are many great organizations and causes out there competing for your attention, but we believe that what we’re doing at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is truly special,” said Danielle Knecht, FCMA’s Development Manager. “We are the only free aquarium in the United States accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Keeping admission free allows us to reach a broader audience, including families and schools that can’t afford expensive entry fees.”

FCMA’s goal is to raise $15,000 by the end of the year, as part of the $500,000 the non-profit organization raises annually to support the Aquarium. This crucial funding allows the Aquarium to provide free or very low cost marine science and environment education to 300,000 people each year, including 150,000 schoolchildren.

“With your support, we can continue offering experiences to students that engage them in science and encourage them to reach for their dreams,” said Knecht. “Our programs have launched many students to success, helping us live up to our reputation as the number one teaching aquarium in the world.”

Aquarium programs are unique because students are trained to be the experts. For example, Sea Ranger volunteers (5th grade and up) help with tidepool walks, junior and senior docents lead summer tours and student researchers explain their scientific methods to visitors. As students participate in Aquarium programs they learn crucial skills such as public speaking and critical thinking. They gain the confidence to strive for greatness, pursuing higher education and advancing in professional careers.

William Whittenbury is an example of one of the many successful students with roots at the Aquarium. He started as a Sea Ranger and a Junior Docent, and has since made it his mission to educate people about the vaquita, an endangered species of porpoise in the Gulf of California. We have been fortunate to mentor William and others on their journeys, and we look forward to sharing these opportunities with many more.

Please help us encourage more students like William by donating to FCMA today!
