Honoring Russ Lesser
Russ Lesser, President of Dive N’ Surf and long-time President of Body Glove, is being recognized for his notable contributions to the community and the marine environment at Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s (FCMA’s) Grand Grunion Gala on April 22, 2017.
“Russ has been an ocean advocate throughout his life, a passion that started when his great aunt brought him to Cabrillo Beach as a little boy where he explored the tidepools and played in the surf,” said Caroline Brady, Executive Director of FCMA. “He has endeavored to share his love of the ocean by supporting groups like Cabrillo Marine Aquarium; whether it’s sponsoring buses for field trips or donating to the Aquarium’s educational programs.”
Russ Lesser continues to serve on FCMA’s Corporate Circle Committee and supports the Grand Grunion Gala every year with top-selling auction donations. He also supports ocean conservation efforts, serving on the Board of Directors for Reef Check, an international non-profit dedicated to preserving oceans and reefs.
Each year, FCMA hosts the Grand Grunion Gala to support the Aquarium’s young scientists, ocean conservation and marine education programs. The event has made fundraising synonymous with fun and this year will be better than ever. Instead of a formal sit-down dinner, the Aquarium’s Frank Gehry-designed space will be transformed into a hip beach resort with fire pits, cabanas and gourmet food stations featuring locally farmed, seasonal and sustainable fare prepared by Primal Alchemy Chef Paul Buchanan.
Guests will mix and mingle while sipping exotic cocktails and shopping for one-of-a-kind auction items. The program will be short and participants have a chance to win a trip for two to Hawaii. The evening will close with dancing under the stars to live music by honoree Russ Lesser and his band, Thin Ice.
Tickets are $200 with discounts available for Friends members. For information or to purchase tickets, go to www.grandgruniongala.org or call (310) 548-2031. The Gala takes place 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, 3720 Stephen M. White Dr., San Pedro. Top sponsors of the event include Jeffrey P. Neu, California Sulphur Company, Tesoro Los Angeles Refinery and the Port of Los Angeles.
A facility of the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks, San Pedro’s Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is dedicated to interpreting the Southern California marine environment. Recognized for its award-winning educational programs, the Aquarium attracts more than 300,000 people each year. Admission is free. Friends raises funds for the Aquarium’s activities and programs.
