A Clean Sweep!

Thank you to everyone who helped pick up trash during the 27th annual Coastal Cleanup Day! We had a great turnout with 387 volunteers who picked up 409 pounds of trash and 380 pounds of recyclables. Also, a Styrofoam contest netted seven pounds of Styrofoam alone, which is a lot considering how light those little bits and pieces can be. Overall a very productive and successful morning.

Help keep the momentum of Coastal Cleanup Day going the rest of the year
Keeping the beach and ocean clean is much more than a one day a year project. As part of this ongoing effort, CMA also hosts monthly beach cleanups. "A well cared for beach really makes a big difference," said Esther Nah, Aquarium Educator. "We've noticed that visitors are more likely to respect the beach and pick up their trash if the beach is already clean."

CMA needs your help! On the first Saturday of each month at 8am, CMA staff and volunteers meet at the steps in front of the Aquarium. Before heading out to the beach, there's a short talk about the challenges facing our coast from human impacts and how the Aquarium helps maintain a healthy coast by hosting beach cleanups and other programs. Then everyone grabs an old pillow case instead of a plastic bag, to reduce the amount of plastic being used, and heads as a group to Cabrillo Beach ready to pick up trash.

Once out on the beach, you never know what you might find. According to Nah, one of the strangest things found was a massive construction spool used to hold wire that was close to five feet tall. Another memorable item was an engine block, how that ended up at the beach…we'll never know. Of course volunteers also find lots of Styrofoam pieces, and other items left behind by beachgoers. Every item picked up, whether it’s large or small makes a difference, either way it’s one less piece of trash in the ocean.

To find out when the next beach cleanup is please check the website calendar.
