New Education Curator

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA) welcomes Vic Chow as the new Education Curator. Chow is taking over the responsibility of overseeing the on-site education department, which includes managing and developing marine science programs for students in kindergarten through high school and supervising four full-time and 20 part-time staff members.

"We are very excited to welcome Vic Chow to the CMA team and into a position that has been vacant for five years," said Mike Schaadt, Director of CMA. "He brings more than 30 years of experience in marine research and ocean science education to this crucial leadership role."

Previously, Chow was the Education and Outreach Manager at Bodega Marine Lab in Bodega Bay, which is operated by UC Davis. There he taught field ecology classes to college students and also served as the Research Data Manager for the lab. During 2004, Chow co-founded a non-profit called Ocean Discovery! with his wife Michelle Chow to support K-12 marine science education.

"As CMA's Education Curator, I now have the opportunity to apply my marine lab experience to a well-respected science education center," said Chow. "What I really enjoy about science and teaching is the teamwork; it's a very collaborative and social process and I look forward to sharing with as well as learning from other CMA staff members."

Chow actually worked with a CMA staff member many years ago. Prior to becoming the Research Data Manager at Bodega Marine Lab in 1984, Chow started a research project at the lab as a graduate student and worked as a teaching assistant. One of his students was Ed Mastro, CMA's Director of Exhibits, who stayed on at the lab to conduct his own research and to help Chow with his thesis project.

"It's great to be working with Vic again," said Mastro. "Even though we worked together more than 30 years ago, I still remember Vic's passion for marine science research and his gift for teaching. He has the experience needed to strengthen our core education programs and will be a valuable asset to the CMA team."

Chow has a Ph.D. in Ecology from UC Davis, a Masters Degree in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and a BS in Biological Sciences from UC Berkeley.
