"Amazing Aquariums"
It all started with a phone call on a Monday morning.
Paula Moore, Executive Director of FRIENDS of CMA, received a call from a supporter in Seattle who had just seen a show all about the Aquarium on Pets TV. The show featured interviews with several CMA staff members, information about many of the animals and great details about the touch tank and research taking place in the Aquatic Nursery.
This was exciting news; people in Seattle had the chance to learn about CMA and Southern California marine life!
Then, on Tuesday morning, a couple arrived at 10 in the morning eager to visit the Aquarium. It turned out that they had seen the same show on Pets TV. So they hopped in their car and drove to San Pedro from... Phoenix, Arizona. The couple from Phoenix, Christine and Robert Jeglum, are self-professed ocean addicts.
"We love the ocean, we go on scuba trips all over the world, in fact our next trip is to Australia," explained Christine Jeglum. "Since we’re landlocked in Phoenix, we have to drive to get our ocean fix. It’s not an unusual thing for us to hop in the car and drive to Southern California."
Christine Jeglum actually grew up near San Diego and loves visiting aquariums, but she didn’t know about CMA until she saw the show on Pets TV. As soon as she found out, she had to go and she thought the drive was well-worth the visit.
"We enjoyed our visit so much; I loved everything. My favorite things were looking at the different aquariums and the touch tank; they just don’t have that at other aquariums," said Christine Jeglum. "The person at the touch tank talked about the animals and explained how if you touch them the animals will react in a certain way, it was very informative and we really enjoyed that. Even parking our car was a learning experience because we saw the whale tails painted in the parking lot. I love that!"
The source of inspiration for Christine and Robert Jeglum’s visit to the Aquarium was Lisa Ramirez, a producer for Entertainment Studios. Lisa actually grew up in San Pedro and went to school in Palos Verdes and her father used to live right next to CMA.
"I really felt compelled to do a show about something in San Pedro," said Ramirez. "This area really means a lot to me and there is so much to see here, people should know about it."
The Pets TV show featuring CMA was Ramirez's first on an aquarium. After learning how much her show is appreciated by CMA staff and how it inspired a couple to drive 400 miles to visit the Aquarium, she said, "When people respond to a show like that it gives me a warm feeling; it’s lovely."
