Beaches and Mud Flats

Beaches & Mudflats

Beaches and mudflats are shifting, moving habitats and only a few types of animals have become specialized to live in them. At the Sandy Beach Wave Tank, waves shape the shore. Crabs, clams, sand dollars, sand stars and fishes live in this ever-changing area. Mudflats support large underground animal communities, salt marshes, and populations of shorebirds. Look carefully at the surface and under the mud for evidence of animals as they burrow and feed.

Exhibits also explore how man's activities can harm or enhance marine life. See how the Los Angeles Harbor has changed. Examine the positive and negative aspects of offshore oil development.
