Commitment to Conservation

We believe that our responsibility toward wildlife extends beyond just safeguarding the animals in our care.  We are part of this world and we greatly affect our ocean environment. How can we take better care of our ocean?  Here are just a few ways we can help protect our world’s oceans:

Seafood Watch
The choices we make drive the seafood markets. You can make a difference by supporting those fisheries and fish farms that are better for the environment.  Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is a partner in this project of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  To learn more about seafood sources, visit Seafood Watch or print out a pocket-sized card to carry with you when you dine and shop.

Get involved in designing California's Marine Protection Areas (MPAs)
The State of California is asking for public input on designing a new system of Marine Protected Areas in Southern California.  For more information or to make your thoughts known, visit Marine Life Protection Act Initiative.

Interested where the proposed MPAs are located? The Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Blue Ribbon Task Force adopted the preferred marine protected area (MPA) proposal for the south coast study region. Click here to view the proposal.

Want to know more about our local Marine Protected Areas? CalOceans provides many resources about our valuable ocean resources.

When visiting Cabrillo Coastal Park, remember to:
  • Not feed the birds
  • Recycle your cans and bottles
  • Not litter and put all your trash in trash cans
watershedWatersheds: It all Flows to Sea
We may not realize it, but what we do at home can greatly affect our ocean.  Trash and chemicals wash down our streets and flow to the nearby ocean through our storm drains.  If you live in Los Angeles County, do you know where your storm drains flow?

Do you know your footprint? Do you know your ecological footprint?
Ecological footprints is a quick measure of how many "Earths" it takes to support your lifestyle. Calculate your Ecological Footprint.

Always remember: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Taking simple actions at home and work can have positive impacts on the world around us. Want to know how you can become “greener?” Here are some things we can all do:
  • Reduce
    • Turn off lights when not in use
    • Turn off and unplug electronics when not in use
    • Water lawn only when necessary
    • Shorten your showers and use low-flow showerheads
    • Limit amount of paper used, print only when needed
    • Stop junk mail to your home
  • Reuse
    • Don't throw away something if you can give it away. You can even sell it and make some money
    • Buy used items – They'll be new to you
    • Re-use gift boxes, ribbon, tissue paper, bows, packing supplies (bubble wrap, peanuts, etc.)
    • Use cloth napkins, cloth diapers and dish cloths
  • Recycle
    • Compost your garden waste
    • Go to your local recycling center or use your recycle trash cans
There are many other organizations that also promote stewardship of our local oceans.
