| Materials:
· one brown-shelled hard-boiled egg
· one cup white vinegar
Procedure: To simulate the effect of acidic oceans on marine life try this experiment at home. Put a brown hard-boiled egg in a glass of vinegar and leave it there overnight. The next day inspect the hardness and color of the shell. What do you think will happen? Results: The acid in the vinegar has slowly dissolved the calcium in the eggshell making it quite soft. The brown color is turning white. Corals and other marine life have the same problem trying to make calcium-based skeletons and shells in a more acidic ocean. |
