Science and management of Hawaiian dolphins and whales

Join us as we take a Deeper Dive into the science and management of Hawaiian dolphins and whales with Dr. Robin Baird. Dr. Baird will discuss the various research methods used to study cetaceans in Hawaiian waters, including pilot whales, dwarf sperm whales, and false killer whales. Robin will also share how science can be used to influence management decisions as well as some factors that can hinder effective management.
Robin Baird is a Research Biologist with Cascadia Research Collective, as well as Affiliate Faculty at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology, Oregon State University, and Hawai‘i Pacific University. He currently lives with his beautiful family in Olympia Washington while his primary research focus is Hawaiian odontocetes – pretty much enjoying the best of both worlds!
Robin has studied marine mammals around the world – literally! After graduate school he participated in studies in New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, North Carolina, Nova Scotia, Iceland, and Italy. He earned his Ph.D. in Biology from Simon Fraser University in 1994 and was a Post-doctoral Fellow at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada from 1996 to 1999. For many years his research focused on marine mammals in British Columbia and Washington, but upon completion of his Post-doc at Dalhousie, his primary focus has been a multi-species, multi-question study of Hawaiian odontocetes.
He has authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, two books (Killer Whales of the World published in 2002 and The Lives of Hawai‘i’s Dolphins and Whales, Natural History and Conservation in 2016) and a number of book chapters. He is also an Editor of Endangered Species Research.
