PADI Internship Program
Each summer since 1993, five high school students participate in a nine-week PADI Foundation Summer Research Internship, which is specially designed to help students gain first-hand knowledge about Southern California’s local marine life, while acquiring valuable research experience in a lab setting. This is a special opportunity for interns to discover their inner-scientist and learn important professional skills such as public speaking, organizing presentations and scientific writing.
In order to successfully fulfill the internship, students must design and complete a research project. Thanks to funding from the PADI Foundation and FRIENDS of CMA, students receive a stipend after finishing each phase of the project including the proposal, data collection and final report. Funding from FRIENDS of CMA also covers special equipment and other research project costs.
To get ready for their projects, students attend workshops and participate in activities designed to help them develop, prepare and implement a project based on scientific standards. Instruction is provided each year by a college student who oversees the program and mentors the interns in conjunction with CMA Research Curator Kiersten Darrow.
This year’s PADI mentor, Madaly Alcala, a soon to be UC-Berkeley sophomore and former PADI intern, took time to put together a newsletter about the program to share what students are working on this summer. Hot off the virtual press, read all about the PADI Internship in the July 2013 Newsletter.
