FRIENDS Announces Marine Science Scholarship Winners
FRIENDS of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (FCMA) awarded $5,000 in college scholarships to students majoring in life or environmental sciences. “Each year we award student volunteers and part-time staff members who have devoted at least two years fulfilling the mission of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium as part of the Christiane Rinkes Memorial Scholarship Fund,” said Danielle Knecht, FCMA’s Development Manager. “This is the perfect way to reward students who have given so much to Aquarium and support them as they carry CMA’s legacy forward pursuing careers in science education or marine research.”
This year’s recipients are Madaly Alcala, a San Pedro High graduate, who will continue at UC Berkeley in the fall majoring in molecular environmental biology; Michelle Cohen, a recent Palos Verdes High graduate, who will be a University of Rochester freshman majoring in biology; Colleen Marcus, an El Segundo High graduate who will be majoring in marine biology at UC Santa Cruz; and Adrienne McColl, formerly of San Pedro High, who continues her aquatic and fishery science studies at the University of Washington.
Alcala hopes to study plankton at beaches and coasts near low-income communities to see how the environment and pollution correlate with impoverished areas. Both Cohen and Marcus want to share their ocean passion and knowledge with others; Cohen as a science teacher and Marcus as a marine researcher. McColl plans on starting a sustainable aquaculture business after graduating.
