Tesoro Donates $50,000
Longtime supporter Tesoro Los Angeles Refinery doubled its donation to $50,000 this year, ensuring that even more children have the opportunity to experience Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. The gift comes at a time when budget cuts have forced many schools to cancel field trips.
“We are thrilled by Tesoro’s generosity! Now, more than 2,500 students from Wilmington, Carson and Long Beach will be able to participate in the Aquarium’s Sea Search program,” said Caroline Brady, Executive Director of FRIENDS of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (FCMA). “Students from elementary through high school will have the chance get their hands sandy and their toes wet while the CMA’s Education staff engages them in inquiry-based science lessons.”
Tesoro’s donation to FCMA covers bus transportation and supplies for field experiments and laboratory programs. CMA staff members work closely with teachers to customize field trips based on what each class is studying. Teachers receive tailored pre-visit and post-visit materials to expand the learning experience and tie in cross-curricular activities that enhance the teaching of science concepts.
In addition to being a key funder of the Sea Search program, Tesoro is an annual supporter of FCMA’s Corporate Circle membership program as well as a long-running sponsor of the Grand Grunion Gala. In recognition for its amazing support, Tesoro was honored at the Gala on May 3, 2014 with the John M. Olguin Marine Environment Award. The award is named for late Aquarium Director John M. Olguin, who, as a lifeguard in the 1930’s, developed a life-long passion for teaching children about the marine environment.
“Tesoro deserves this award for inspiring young people to learn; for enhancing public science education and for supporting the Aquarium,” Brady said. Dan Carlson, the refinery’s vice president of operations, serves on the FCMA board of directors. Public affairs manager Brissa Sotelo-Vargas serves on the Corporate Circle Committee.
Tesoro employees are very active in the community, participating annually in electronic recycling and beach cleanup events. Tesoro also supports sustainable development –the Los Angeles Refinery office was the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in Carson.
