CMA Staff Member on Ship-Based Research Expedition to Antarctica
CMA staff member Dominique Richardson is venturing to Antarctica on-board the icebreaker R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer to help with polar research. The expedition will travel along the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to study the impacts of climate change.
The movement of warmer ocean water through or around relatively cooler ice sheets has the potential to lead to increased melting. This project will determine the potential vulnerability of key ice streams to the infiltration of warmer ocean water and whether this could explain any of the observed thinning of the ice sheet.
This research expedition will provide important information about a particular section of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and will be critical for future ice sheet models and investigations into the ice sheet's contributions to sea levels.
There are three ways to join Dominique on her exciting journey!
Follow Dominique's journals, check out photos, try fun science activities and ask questions by visiting the expedition website.
Listen to a live talk Dominique will be giving from Antarctica during CMA's Earth Day Fair and Coastal Bird Fest. You can join us in CMA's Auditorium at 1 p.m. on April 18 or register for the PolarConnect event online.
Participate in the PolarTREC Teacher Workshop on May 30. Learn hands-on activities to bring polar and climate change science into the classroom and practice lessons that use real data from current research projects to help students understand the process of science. Click here for more information.
