Help us "Blow Up" Whale Education - VOTE today!!
Did you know that modern-day whale watching got its start right here in San Pedro when the legendary John M. Olguin took schoolchildren out on boats to see whales migrating by our coast? Every year, many different species of whales pass by—the popular gray whale, the amazing blue whale and the charismatic humpback.
How cool would it be to get a closer look at three of these cetacean superstars--not only from the outside but from the inside too? Our plan is to make a big splash in whale education by adding amazing life-size inflatables that will thrill the young and young at heart. Our “pod” will include:
• A 100-foot blue whale, the largest creature on the planet Earth (and one of the most endangered with only 10,000 left.) • A 45-foot humpback whale, one of the most recognizable and charismatic creatures in the ocean. • A 40-foot gray whale, California’s state marine mammal and a species most likely to be seen in our local waters—often very close to shore. • A 15-foot gray whale calf—the size babies are when traveling north for summer feeding grounds. The life-size inflatables will draw visitors to marvel at the sheer size of the entire whale. (Normally, we only see a sliver of these creatures when they surface to breathe or splash.) Not only will visitors be able to walk around the entire whale, but they can also take it a step further and go inside of three of the whales. Inside, visitors will experience the biological architecture of the whales—the ribs, the heart and the lungs. We plan to adapt all three of the larger whales to accommodate wheelchairs, making the experience accessible to all.
Whales are cool—they are mammals like us. They’re huge. They have survived and sometimes bounced back from the brink of extinction despite great odds. They are intelligent. They sing beautiful songs. These beautiful inflatables will be a great addition to Cabrillo’s family friendly and accessible community conservation programs.
