Celebrate Endangered Species Day 2023!

We think this day is so important we turned it into a two-day celebration!

FRIDAY, MAY 19
The Art and Science of White Abalone
 
6 p.m.  Members Reception and Exhibit Opening
Members are invited to an exclusive new exhibit unveiling in the Aquatic Nursery featuring hundreds of baby white abalones we are raising to help save them from extinction. Members also get to mingle with our amazing speakers - become a member today!

7 p.m. Talk
The white abalone is an endangered marine snail native to the California coast. Learn how art and science combine to teach us about their habitat, the threats they face, and the ongoing restoration efforts to protect this species.

Ann Vileisis - award-winning author of the highly acclaimed book, Abalone, will talk about finding a beautiful abalone shell on the beach, which inspired her dive into the creature’s 13,000-year history in California. Followed by a book signing in the Gift Shop.

2:30 p.m. 30 X 30 Presentation: Jade Nguyen, Project Specialist, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), will introduce and discuss 30 x 30, a California statewide initiative which aims to conserve 30% of the state's lands, freshwater, and ocean habitats by 2030. Come learn more about the goals of 30x30, including the need to increase biodiversity protections for the benefit of nature and the communities of California.
 
3 p.m. Kelp Forest Feeding Program 
 
3:30 p.m. California Brown Pelican Presentation: Join the International Bird Rescue discussion on the characteristics of this charismatic bird and how human actions will continue to affect its future and ultimate survival.

4 p.m. Grunion Hatching

4:30 p.m. Cabrillo’s Endangered Species Presentation
