CMA Staff Members Tour SA Recycling
The City of Los Angeles recycling program accepts a wide variety of items in the blue recycling bins, everything from glass, to Styrofoam, to orange juice cartons. But what about items that don’t fit in the blue bin? That's where SA Recycling comes in, a company dedicated to recycling items that fall into the huge to colossal range.
Thanks to a generous silent auction item donated by SA Recycling for the 2011 FCMA Grand Grunion Gala, several CMA staff members had the opportunity to tour the SA Recycling plant based on Terminal Island. Paula Moore, FRIENDS of CMA Executive Director, was one of the winning bidders, and invited several CMA staff members along. "This was an extraordinary opportunity to learn more about recycling on a very large scale, SA recycles automobiles, buses, trucks, tractors and steel bridges," explained Moore. "It also gave CMA staff an educational experience that they can pass on in their teachings about environmental conservation and recycling."
Before getting started on the tour led by SA Recycling General Manager Moises Figueroa, CMA staff members donned reflector vests, protective goggles and helmets and then hopped in electric carts for a personal tour around the plant. The electric carts provided the first indication of SA Recycling's commitment to the environment, but as the tour progressed, CMA staff realized the commitment went way beyond using electric powered carts.
The highlight of the tour was when CMA staff members climbed steep metal stairs for a bird's-eye view of a giant shredder capable of reducing cars to metal scraps. Recycled steel is then shipped to other countries for reuse, giving old vehicles a second life as new cars, which prevents millions of tons of material from ending up in landfills.
During the recycling process, SA Recycling uses recycled water to cool the machinery and leads the industry in reducing greenhouse gases through the use of solar energy at their facility in Anaheim. Plus, SA Recycling has one of the best stormwater prevention programs, setting an example for other companies on how to stop pollution from reaching the ocean through a clean and efficient recycling process.
