"Youth on Board" Video Contest
Lights, camera, ocean! Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is sponsoring a "Youth On Board" video contest for middle school and high school students. All participants have to do is create a video that is 60 seconds or less featuring their inspiring impressions of Southern California's ocean. What the video ultimately contains is up to the interpretation of the contestant and director of the video.
"This is an opportunity for youth in Southern California to have their voices heard," said Mike Schaadt, Director of CMA. "We are excited to see how they funnel their passion and concern for our oceans into a video, which is why we kept the contest requirements very minimal, we didn't want to limit creativity."
According to research done by The Ocean Project, today's teens are more socially conscious than any other generation and they consider the conservation of the ocean to be a high priority. Young people also play an important role helping parents and adults make good environmental decisions that benefit the ocean.
"The video contest is a way for students to take charge and convey a message about the ocean that is most important to them," said Schaadt. "Parents are already looking to teens for information, now we would like to hear from teens and see their ocean stories."
Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and how effectively the message conveys the inspirational nature of the ocean. Videos must be 60 seconds or less in length and ocean messages must be conveyed without dialogue requiring extra creative ocean flair.
Students can participate in CMA's "Youth On Board" video contest as individuals or as a group. Entrants must be enrolled in 7th through 12th grade at the time of entry and be legal residents of one of Southern California's 12 counties. The deadline for entries is May 15, 2012. There will be one trophy awarded for the winning entry (group or individual) and gift certificates to the CMA Gift Shop for each individual member of the group listed on the entry form.
CMA partners at Nausicaá Aquarium in Boulogne sur Mer, France and Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu, Hawaii are also hosting video contests at the same time for young people living near each Aquarium.
