Intel Innovation Showcase
On May 23, 2012, the Intel Corporation hosted the Intel Innovation Showcase in Sacramento at the Capitol building to highlight 26 California students considered to be the "best and the brightest" based on innovative science projects submitted to Intel competitions during the last two years. Intel invited CMA aspiring young scientists Julian Kimura and Manu Vaish to participate.
Intel organized the event to highlight the great things that are happening in California science to legislators. To make this possible, Intel set up tables and canopies on the Capitol steps where students displayed their research posters giving elected officials and staff members the chance to stop by and talk to students on their way into work. One Capitol regular who took time to talk to several students happened to be Governor Jerry Brown!
The day started in the Capitol Chambers with a presentation by State Senator Gaines that recognized Intel for all the great work the company is doing to encourage future scientists. Later in the day, students met with their local state representatives during one-on-one meetings and received proclamations recognizing their scientific achievements. CMA student researchers, Kimura and Vaish, had a joint meeting with Assemblymembers Lowenthal and Huffman to discuss their science projects and future research plans.
"This was a very special event because Intel really made the students feel celebrated by recognizing their achievements and by planning an entire day at the Capitol just for them. It helped students see how important their work is," said CMA Research Curator Kiersten Darrow. "And it was exciting that two CMA students were invited! The event was a validation that our method of growing young scientists is not only helping student researchers win awards, but also that they are being recognized among the best and the brightest. I was beyond proud."
