Association of Zoos and Aquariums

Association of Zoos and AquariumsThe Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is America’s leading accrediting organization for zoos and aquariums and accredits only those institutions that have achieved rigorous standards for animal care, education, wildlife conservation and science.

AZA continually monitors accredited organizations, and every accredited zoo and aquarium must go through the entire accreditation process every five years, a process Cabrillo Marine Aquarium successfully completed in 2010.

Fewer than 10 percent of the approximately 2,400 animal exhibitors licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture are AZA accredited. CMA is proud to be a member of the AZA and uphold their standards of excellence.

In recent years, CMA has been honored with AZA’s Edward H. Bean Award for Significant Achievement recognizing the Aquatic Nursery’s success raising garabaldi fish and AZA’s Munson Aquatic Conservation Exhibitry Award for the Exploration Center and the Aquatic Nursery.

For more information, visit the AZA website.
