Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Is Accessible to All
Since CMA's main Exhibit Hall was first designed and constructed in 1981, one of the overarching goals of the Aquarium was to make it accessible to as many people as possible. The Aquarium continues to make changes to ensure the entire facility complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Facility improvements include a ramp leading up to the Aquarium, and an elevator to access the Virginia Reid Moore Marine Research Library. There is also a cement walkway that leads straight towards the water on Inner Cabrillo Beach, which is wheelchair accessible. And the Cabrillo Coastal Park Trail is wheelchair accessible and provides a great view overlooking the tidepools along Outer Cabrillo Beach.
Three wheelchairs outfitted with thick wheels for sand that people can use to go to the beach are available free for guest use! If you need a beach wheelchair, just visit the Aquarium's Information Booth and ask for one. All we ask in return is that it's returned before 5pm when the Aquarium closes.
"CMA's mission is to engage all visitors in education, recreation and research to promote knowledge, appreciation and conservation of the marine life of Southern California," explained Ed Mastro, CMA Director of Exhibits. "We believe that experiencing the ocean from the sand is just as important as having the chance to see Southern California's marine life up close in the Aquarium."
So don't let being in a wheelchair stop you from visiting the Aquarium, come on down and take a spin in the sand…the ocean is calling.
